If you ride Garmin hardware and want the wear status in front of you on the handlebars, Garmin Connect is the right place. If you want wear weighted by wet rides, surface and climbing, plus a tyre pressure calculator, chain care intervals per lubrication method and a service book that records costs, BikeCare is the better fit, including alongside Garmin.

In context
Garmin overhauled gear tracking in Garmin Connect in February 2026, and since firmware v31.30 (2 June 2026) the Edge bike computers show component wear right on the handlebars. That is a real advantage BikeCare does not have, and it is worth saying first. The difference sits elsewhere: at Garmin, gear tracking is a side feature next to training, health and social; BikeCare is built for nothing else, and its calculations do not depend on who made your bike computer. On this page you get the sourced detail on both, including the points where BikeCare loses.
Where Garmin Connect is stronger
- Wear status on the handlebars. Since firmware v31.30 (2 June 2026) the Edge bike computers show a progress bar per component while you ride, and components can be created, edited and deleted on the device itself: no phone, no browser. BikeCare cannot do that.
- Free, with no paywall. The complete gear tracking sits in the free Garmin Connect app; Garmin itself calls the additions of 24 February 2026 'free software updates'. With BikeCare, auto-setup and the Copilot can be tried once a month without Pro, and more comes with the optional Pro subscription; the AI parts recommendation with shop links is free, at 40 requests a month.
- No detour via a third party. The activity goes straight from the Garmin device into Garmin Connect. For AUTOMATIC import, BikeCare hangs on the Strava webhook chain: if the link breaks, rides have to be entered by hand.
- Across sports, and on your wrist. Alongside bike parts you can manage running shoes, skis, snowboards and skates, among other things, and more than 40 Garmin watches have allowed a gear change right before the start since Q1 2026. BikeCare is a bike-only app.

Garmin Connect covers training, health, sleep, challenges and gear. BikeCare does one thing: the maintenance condition of bicycles. That shows in the depth: a curated parts list with standard intervals already stored, rather than freely named components with a maximum distance you estimate yourself.
Wear weighted by wet rides, surface and climbing
BikeCare weights wet conditions, surface and elevation gain. A wet gravel loop attacks the chain harder than the same distance dry on tarmac, and exactly that feeds into the remaining life. For Garmin, the quantities documented on the provider's own pages are distance, hours, days and activity count.
Tyre pressure calculator with tyre system and ETRTO limit
System weight, tyre width separately front and rear, tube, tubeless or hookless: out of that comes a concrete pressure figure, and on hookless rims the ISO/ETRTO maximum is hard-capped. A feature of this kind is not documented for Garmin Connect.
Service book with cost per year and per kilometre
Every service with date, workshop, cost and warranty, exportable as CSV and PDF, handy when you sell the bike and in warranty cases. Plus the analysis of what the bike costs per year and per kilometre ridden.
Independent of the hardware maker
BikeCare calculates the same way whether the data comes from a Garmin, a Wahoo or the Strava app. Change your bike computer and your maintenance history simply comes with you. For the automatic data flow, though, BikeCare does need a Strava account.

What is the best Garmin Connect alternative for bike maintenance?
BikeCare is an alternative to the gear tracking in Garmin Connect that is built specifically for bike maintenance. It works out the remaining life of chain, tyres, brake pads, cassette and more than 20 other parts, and weights the conditions while doing so: wet and surface for the drivetrain, elevation gain for the brakes. On top of that come a tyre pressure calculator, chain care intervals per lubrication method and a digital service book with cost tracking. Garmin Connect stays the better choice if you want the wear status visible directly on the Edge bike computer, or if you want running shoes and winter sports kit counted alongside the bike.
Can Garmin Connect calculate bicycle component wear?
Garmin Connect counts the use of each component in distance, hours, days and activity count, and compares that with a maximum distance the user enters themselves. Out of that come a progress bar and a warning when a part approaches the limit. A calculation that derives its own forecast from riding conditions such as wet, surface or elevation gain is not documented on the provider's pages (as at 19 July 2026). The remaining range of a part at Garmin is therefore the result of your own estimate, not of a wear model.
Does gear tracking in Garmin Connect cost anything?
No. Gear tracking is part of the free Garmin Connect app and needs no subscription; Garmin expressly calls the additions in its press release of 24 February 2026 'free software updates'. The paid Garmin Connect+ subscription (according to heise.de of 28 March 2025, €9 a month or €90 a year) contains other features and not the gear tracking. The real outlay is the hardware: without a Garmin watch or Edge, no activities flow in automatically.
Do I need a Strava account for BikeCare if I ride a Garmin?
Yes. BikeCare syncs rides exclusively via Strava. If you ride a Garmin and have already connected it to Strava (as most people have), there is nothing more to set up: the ride goes from the Edge or the watch to Strava, and from there straight into BikeCare by webhook. If you deliberately ride without Strava, BikeCare cannot be fed kilometres automatically. That is the clearest limit of BikeCare against Garmin Connect, where the data comes from your own device with no intermediate step.
Can I use BikeCare and Garmin Connect side by side?
Yes, and for many people that is the most sensible route. Garmin Connect stays the place for training, activities and the display on the bike computer; BikeCare takes over the maintenance side with remaining life, tyre pressure, chain care intervals and the service book. The prerequisite is an existing connection from Garmin to Strava, because BikeCare draws the rides from there. There is no direct data exchange between BikeCare and Garmin Connect.
Does Garmin Connect keep a service book with maintenance entries and costs?
Garmin Connect offers brand and model per gear item, an expected lifespan, a notes field, photos, the activity history plus retiring and reactivating parts, so a documentation layer does exist. A dedicated maintenance entry with date and workshop, and a field for purchase price or invoices, are not documented on the provider's pages (as at 19 July 2026). Garmin allows a full account data export as a ZIP with CSV and JSON files, but no service book export as a PDF. BikeCare records cost and warranty for each service and exports the service book as CSV and PDF.
Does BikeCare show wear on the bike computer?
No. BikeCare runs on the phone, on a tablet and in the browser, not on a bike computer. Garmin is clearly ahead here: since firmware v31.30 of 2 June 2026, the Edge models 540, 550, 840, 850, 1040, 1050 and MTB show a progress bar per component while you ride, and components can be managed directly on the device. If you want that display on the handlebars, Garmin is where you get it.
